It is one of the most common things we hear when we pick up the phone. We only light the fireplace a few times a winter, so surely the chimney does not need cleaning. It is a completely reasonable question, and the honest answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no. The amount you use a fireplace is only one factor in how dirty and how risky the flue becomes, and in a climate like Chino's, where fireplaces tend to sit idle for most of the year and get lit only on a handful of cool evenings, light use can actually work against you in ways that surprise people.
The thing to understand is that a chimney is not just a place where soot accumulates in proportion to how many fires you light. It is an opening at the top of your house that is exposed to the weather, to animals, and to the way a particular fire is burned, all year round whether you light it or not. So the real question is not simply how often you use it, but what happens to the flue during all the time you are not using it, and how the few fires you do light are actually burned.
Why a little burning can be the wrong kind of burning
Here is the counterintuitive part. A fireplace that is lit only a few times a winter tends to be burned in exactly the way that creates the most creosote. Occasional users often build a small, slow fire, frequently with wood that has not been properly seasoned, and that cool, smoldering kind of fire is the worst for a flue. It does not get hot enough to burn cleanly, so it lays down creosote faster than a hot, well-fed fire would, and creosote is the sticky, flammable residue that fuels chimney fires. The home that burns the least can quietly carry the more dangerous flue, because the little burning it does is the wrong kind and never reaches the temperature that helps keep the liner clean.
A frequently used fireplace, by contrast, is often burned hotter and more skillfully, with seasoned wood and a good draft, which produces less creosote per fire even though there are more fires. None of this has anything to do with how often you light a fire, and all of it accumulates during the idle months.
So a lightly used chimney can carry two separate problems at once, the creosote from cool, infrequent fires and the blockage and debris from long idle stretches. Both are invisible from the living room, and both can make that first cozy fire of the season more hazardous than it looks. The first cold night is a bad time to discover any of it, when smoke pushes back into the room or, worse, a chimney fire starts in a flue nobody had checked.
