What actually happens inside a gas-vented flue
When gas burns, it produces water vapor as a byproduct, and that moisture travels up the flue along with the other combustion gases. In a well-matched system the gases stay warm enough to exit cleanly, but in many Chino homes the gas logs were installed into a fireplace whose flue was originally sized for a wood fire, which makes it too large for the gas unit. In an oversized flue the gases cool down before they reach the top, and the water vapor condenses on the liner.
